Born on March 3, 1979, in Raleigh, North Carolina, Matthew was the youngest of three children. He grew up in a tight-knit family and was a graduate of Raleigh High School, where he was known for his enthusiasm, sense of humor, and academic drive. Throughout his childhood, Matthew enjoyed a wide variety of hobbies, from playing basketball with friends to exploring the outdoors with his family. His love for nature would remain a central part of his life, and many of his happiest memories were of camping trips and fishing outings with his father and siblings.

Matthew’s passion for learning led him to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he earned a degree in Environmental Science. It was here that he developed his deep commitment to sustainability and conservation, both of which would become guiding principles throughout his life. After graduating in 2001, Matthew returned to Hickory, where he began working for local environmental organizations, advocating for the preservation of North Carolina’s natural resources. His work in this field earned him respect from his peers and the admiration of many in the community.
In addition to his professional life, Matthew was deeply involved in local charities, particularly those focused on supporting underserved communities and promoting environmental education. He was known for volunteering his time at local schools, teaching children about ecology and the importance of protecting the planet. His personal philosophy centered around kindness, generosity, and the belief that small actions could make a big difference. Those who knew Matthew often spoke of his infectious optimism and how he was always ready to lend a helping hand or offer advice when it was needed most.

“Matthew had an incredible ability to bring people together,” said his longtime friend, Emily Parker. “He was one of those rare people who made you feel like the world was a better place simply by knowing him. He was a natural leader, not because he wanted to lead, but because he cared so much about the people around him.”
Family was always Matthew’s top priority, and he was especially close to his parents, who were his greatest supporters throughout his life. He often credited his mother, Susan Wallace, for instilling in him a deep love of reading and a passion for knowledge. His father, Greg Wallace, was his hero, and Matthew frequently spoke of the life lessons he learned from him during their fishing trips and long conversations.
Matthew was also a devoted brother to his two siblings, older sister Rachel and older brother Mark. The three shared a strong bond, rooted in years of shared experiences, mutual respect, and unconditional love. Although his siblings had moved to different parts of the country in recent years, the bond they shared with Matthew remained unbreakable.

“He was always there when we needed him,” said his sister Rachel. “He had this way of making you feel like everything would be okay, even during tough times. His sense of humor was unparalleled, and he always knew how to bring laughter into any situation.”
Despite the challenges he faced in recent years with his health, Matthew never let it define him. His illness was a long and difficult journey, but Matthew faced each obstacle with remarkable courage and an unwavering sense of hope. Even in his most difficult moments, he continued to find joy in simple pleasures – a quiet walk in the park, a family gathering, or a shared cup of coffee with a friend.
Matthew’s battle with illness was ultimately a testament to his strength and resilience. He fought hard, and his family and friends were by his side every step of the way. In his final weeks, Matthew expressed gratitude for the love and support he had received from those around him, and he found comfort in knowing that his legacy would live on through the countless lives he touched.
Matthew’s death leaves a deep hole in the hearts of those who knew him, but his memory will live on. He is survived by his parents, Greg and Susan Wallace of Hickory, NC; his siblings, Rachel Wallace of Denver, CO, and Mark Wallace of Asheville, NC; as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends.

A memorial service will be held at the Hickory First United Methodist Church on November 2, 2024, at 3:00 p.m. Family, friends, and the community are invited to join in celebrating Matthew’s life and legacy. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the North Carolina Conservation Network or the Catawba County Food Bank in Matthew’s memory.
Matthew’s family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the doctors, nurses, and staff at Hickory Regional Medical Center for their compassion and care throughout his illness.
